Although it is called planetary nebula, it has nothing to do with planets. The name comes from a historical accident in the 18th century. Early astronomers observed round, fuzzy dots through telescopes. It looks like the disc of Uranus or Neptune. The similarities are only superficial. The reality is even more cruel.
Planetary nebulae are actually remnants of stars. It is an expanding shell of bright gas ejected by a dying Sun-like star. These objects form at the end of a red giant star’s life. The star was not massive enough to explode as a supernova. Instead, it sheds its outer layers. This process leaves behind a hot, dense core.
The exposed core becomes a white dwarf. It is intensely hot. This radiation ionizes the released gas. The shells glow brightly. It expands tens of miles per second. The result is a beautiful, glowing cloud of interstellar matter.
Why is this important? These nebulae recycle the universe. They spread heavy elements into space. These elements are the building blocks of new stars and planets. Without this cycle, life as we know it would not exist. This process is slow. It takes thousands of years for the shell to disappear. The white dwarf remains. It cools over billions of years.

The distinction between these nebulae and supernova remnants is important. A supernova marks the death of a massive star. Planetary nebulae mark the death of low- or intermediate-mass stars. Both enrich the Milky Way. However, the mechanism is different. One is a devastating explosion. The second is a gentle but shedding of skin.
These structures can be seen in the Milky Way. They are bright enough to be detected by amateur telescopes. They look like planets. They are not. They are the last acts of stars like our Sun. This process takes place in the Sun after about 5 billion years. The Earth will likely be consumed. The rest of the solar system may survive. The Sun becomes a white dwarf. It will create a faint nebula. It fades. The cycle continues.
