Phytol is an organic compound that quietly powers the production of synthetic vitamins E and K1. It is the backbone molecule that allows manufacturers to create these nutrients without relying entirely on natural extraction. The history of this chemical is rooted in the early 20th century. In 1909, German chemist Richard Wilstätter first isolated phytol. He did it by breaking down chlorophyll using water, a process known as hydrolysis.

It took another twenty years to understand what the molecule actually looked like. In 1928, fellow German chemist F.G. Fischer determined its structure. Today, you can still obtain phytol by separating chlorophyll from alfalfa. This agricultural link remains relevant.

The real value of phytol emerged in the late 1930s. Scientists realized they could convert it into α -tocopherol. This is the most potent form of vitamin E. It is essential for reproduction in rats. Three separate laboratories reported this conversion in 1938. The finding was not just academic. It was applied immediately to commercial manufacturing.

Vitamin K1 followed close behind. A synthesis method from phytol was developed in 1939. This meant that both major fat-soluble vitamins could be produced synthetically.
