Johannes Kepler started out on a very different path. He enrolled at the University of Tübingen with the intention of becoming a theologian. He wasn’t there to map the stars. He was there to study scripture.

But the classroom dynamic shifted when Michael Maestlin entered the picture. Maestlin was Kepler’s math professor. More importantly, he was an early advocate for Nicolaus Copernicus. While many still clung to the idea that Earth sat still at the center of the universe, Maestlin taught Kepler about the heliocentric model. He explained that Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun.

This was dangerous ground. Challenging the established order of the cosmos wasn’t just an academic exercise. It was a theological minefield. Yet, Maestlin didn’t shy away. He showed Kepler the mathematics behind the Sun-centered system.

Kepler listened. He absorbed the arguments. He began to see the universe not through the lens of rigid theology, but through the logic of geometry and motion. This mentorship sparked an obsession. The student who came to study God ended up studying the mechanics of the heavens.

Why did this matter? Because it set the stage for a complete overhaul of how we understand our place in the solar system. Kepler didn’t just accept Copernicus’s idea. He was going to prove it. And he was going to do it with numbers.
